Afghan Rulers Used Discarded UK Equipment to Find Local Nationals Who Worked With Western Forces, Inquiry Hears

A confidential source has disclosed a parliamentary probe that British authorities failed to secure classified devices allowing the militant group to locate local individuals who collaborated with international military.

Information Leak Endangers Thousands at Risk

The source, known as Person A, testified that Afghans affected by the security lapse were told to change residences and alter their mobile numbers to ensure their safety from the ruling authorities.

Lawmakers are investigating official handling of a massive leak of personal details affecting approximately 19k Afghans who had requested to relocate to the United Kingdom to avoid the regime.

The Information Breach Occurred

An electronic document with their personal data, comprising names, contact details and sometimes family information, was inadvertently disclosed by an official employed at British military command in early 2022.

The leak became known months later, when details of nine people who had applied to relocate to the UK surfaced on online platforms.

Regime's Resources

Many believe there's a false assumption that militant forces are without the same sort of facilities that western nations possess,” the whistleblower testified to the committee.

“We left it all behind in Afghanistan; it's in their hands. Once they acquire your phone number, they are able to track your precise location. That's precisely what intelligence groups did.”

During testimony about if militant forces owned necessary encryption, the whistleblower stated: “They possess all resources.”

Impact of the Data Breach

Early investigations provided to the investigation suggested that at least 49 relatives and colleagues of individuals impacted by the breach had been murdered.

A gag order regarding the breach was put in force in last year and blocked any information regarding the matter from being made public until July 2025.

Safety Measures

Given injunction limitations, Person A and the non-governmental organization she was working with advised individuals at risk they were working with that they had “suspicions that mobile communications had been intercepted”.

“We advised that they relocate if they could and changed their phone numbers. Those were the primary information that, should militant forces acquired such data, would cause their location being found,” she said.

Challenged Assessments

The source argued that government assessment conducted by a retired civil servant had been wrong to determine that the acquisition of the information by militant forces was “unlikely to substantially change present danger”.

“The important fact is that affected people are not standing up to militant forces; they remain concealed. The primary issue involves their previous employment.”

The source explained terrible violence suffered by affected individuals, involving electric shock torture, simulated drowning, and severe beatings.

“We have had young kids who have had bones crushed to try to get households to reveal locations,” Person A stated.
