The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect who crafted a series of unforgettable images associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.

Price was best known for his defined forms and theatrical styles, such as the pastel suits that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."

Price's death comes shortly after he unveiled his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by the late Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he began designing menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to blend tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in shaping form-fitting garments made him a "true original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.

During the nineties, he began working on pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as various looks for her US tour following her marriage.

Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Theatrical Flair: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The fashion world says farewell to a genuine innovator whose impact on fashion and music remains indelibly etched.
