California's Governor Confirms He Is Considering a Presidential Campaign for 2028
The California governor, a prominent Democratic figure, has disclosed that he intends to determine whether to seek the White House in 2028 following the 2026 midterm elections wrap up.
"Yes, it would be dishonest otherwise," Newsom stated when pressed about giving serious thought to a White House bid after the 2026 ballots. "That wouldn't be honest. And I'm not."
The governor's current term as California's leader wraps up in early 2027, and term limits prevent another run. But, he noted that any choice is a long way off.
"It's up to destiny," he remarked.
Increased Visibility as a Administration Opponent
The California governor has stepped forward as a high-profile opponent of the current federal leadership, leveraging his social media accounts and pushing a ballot measure that would expand the party's representation in Congress in following GOP gerrymandering. This move has invited attacks from political opponents.
Clash on Transportation
Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, accused that Newsom does not care about the state's residents in a Sunday appearance on a major news network. The secretary disclosed plans to withhold federal funds from California and suggested revoking the state's ability to grant commercial driver's licenses.
"I plan to withdraw $160 million from the state," he declared, following a recent deadly accident in the state involving an non-citizen semi truck driver that caused fatalities and injured individuals.
The governor's team pointed out that the U.S. government had renewed the driver's employment multiple times, which permitted him to secure a CDL under U.S. law.
Duffy had earlier indicated he was holding back additional funds from California for failing to implement linguistic standards for CDL holders.
Firm Rebuttal from the Administration
"One-time television figure, now Secretary of Transportation, fails to grasp U.S. regulations," the governor's team responded in a last month's release addressing the funding warnings. "For now, in contrast to this person, we'll stick to the facts: The state's CDL holders had a death rate significantly lower than the U.S. average. Texas – the only state with more commercial holders – has a rate almost 50% higher than California. Data speaks for itself. The Trump administration does."
Public Opinion and Campaign Considerations
A recently conducted poll showed that a majority of the party and almost half of voters indicated that the governor must consider running for president in 2028. After the current administration began, Newsom's favorability has increased to an typical level of 33.5% from previous levels, while his disapproval has decreased from an average of over 40% to current figures.
Earlier this year, the governor stated while visiting several battleground states that he had "uncertainty" about his future for 2028.
He also referenced his past difficulties, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the young age of five.
"The idea that a guy who scored 960 on the SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was always in the back of the classroom – the idea that you would even throw that out is, in and of itself, amazing," he said. "Who the hell knows? I await who presents themselves in 2028 and who answers the call. And that is the issue for the voters."
