U.S. actor and playwright Jeremy O Harris, renowned for the award-contending production Slave Play, was detained last month at an airport in Japan on suspicion of trying to bring in illegal drugs into the country, authorities announced.

Details of the Customs Incident

The 36-year-old was intercepted on 16 November at Naha airport, located on Okinawa, after a customs officer discovered 0.78 grams of a crystalline substance containing the synthetic narcotic MDMA in his tote bag, according to a customs spokesperson.

He was promptly taken into custody on suspicion of breaching Japan’s strict Narcotics and Psychotropics Control Act.

Regional customs officials lodged a formal complaint with the prosecutor’s office to initiate legal action against the individual.

Current Status and Judicial Representation

A police official in Tomigusuku, Okinawa, confirmed that Harris remains in custody. The official did not elaborate on whether Harris has acknowledged the allegations.

Presently, it is not known whether the artist has secured a defense attorney in Japan. Inquiries to his representatives were not answered at once.
