Israelis have assembled around the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions proceeded in the neighboring country over an end to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The assault resulted in in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single most fatal day for Jewish people since the World War II.

Israel reacted by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are seen as accurate by the UN and other world agencies.

"The violent enemies have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on Tuesday.

He also promised to "achieve all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will not pose a danger to Israel".

Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel

The government authorities postponed official memorials until mid-October - after the completion of the festive season - but events still occurred across the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the relatives of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was organized in Tel Aviv. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was aired throughout Israeli TV networks.

A period earlier, a minute's silence was held throughout the country.

Peace Meetings in Egypt

At the same time, Israeli and Hamas delegations convened in the Egyptian tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of indirect talks to examine the conditions of the agreement.

A prominent delegate involved in the negotiations said that an night meeting of negotiations began at 19:00 Cairo time.

The official said the morning session ended without significant progress, because of differences over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not restart fighting after the initial stage of the arrangement.

He added that the discussions are "difficult and have not yet produce any major advancement," but pointed out that mediators are striving to narrow the differences between the both parties.

Key Points in Talks

  • An enduring halt to fighting
  • The trade of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Arrangements for humanitarian aid deliveries
  • Post-war management of the area

Civilian Feeling

In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square earlier, young Hagar - whose sibling lived through the incident on the outdoor event, where hundreds were lost their lives and numerous more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - told: "Nowhere seems like home anymore and until every captive come back not a single person will feel safe."

"After we see everybody home again, we can breathe anew. Then we can commence rebuild," she added.

In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in the capital, people gathered to demonstrate their support for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel says 48 stay in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be surviving.

Activist Atalia Regev remarked: "It's necessary do any agreement necessary for the hostages to come back home. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be secure."

Opinion polls now regularly indicate that approximately 70% of Israeli citizens prefer the war to finish in return for the liberation of the abducted.

Palestinian Conditions

At the location of Nova festival, those paying respects assembled to honor the dead.

From there, the sound of military attacks and shelling could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers said the heavy Israeli attacks continued.

In the urban center, attacks were noted in the early hours of that day in the western neighborhood, area and zone neighbourhoods and in the east side district of the community, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.

"Once the evening comes, the anxiety comes with it," displaced Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli bombing last year, described.

"My family are fearful of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are resting together, clinging, particularly my youngest child who puts his head on me throughout the night."

"Constantly we look at the updates to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be completed and that the fighting will come back to us."

Medical Emergency

Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City reported it had taken in the bodies of six people by the afternoon, including three who died in an Israeli attack in the south part area.

A different healthcare center in the southern city of Khan Younis reported additional dead people had been transported. One of them was killed by Israeli troops while attempting to get help to the south, medics stated.
