The acclaimed crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th installment, announced by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-part season created by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the network.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."

The last series wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Rumors about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but confirmation only came this week.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

The seventh season begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue working to tackle misconduct within the police force.

The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio will take on their "most delicate case to date."

New Character and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for busts of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.

However, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still active in the shadows, the teaser hinted.

In a statement, the creator said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had so many followers track the developments of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new season."

He added: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston described being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the colleagues I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with the creator, Martin and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "While anticipating the unit return, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming next year."

"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."

Show History

Line of Duty launched in the early 2010s and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, featuring guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.

Broadcasters haven't revealed when the upcoming series will hit screens.

The finale of season six brought the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and producers indicated at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

However, the network confirmed on this week that a new season is now being produced.
