New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their latest talk.
“That gives me comfort, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”
The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where his condition is described as critical but stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that reassures me, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”
New York police issued video stills earlier this week of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and police mentioned it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.
The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday near MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a child.
“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with a shoulder injury that required surgery.
He joined the Jets as a new signing in March and was expected to be a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on August 2 and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. He is completely involved. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, from Texas, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of Texas University in 2019. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
