The British tennis star earned the most important win of his professional journey by rebounding from a early deficit to overcome world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz with a stunning comeback in the second round of the Paris Masters.

While he had before overcome Alcaraz on two occasions, this win represents Norrie's initial win over a reigning world top-ranked player.

"Huge. So big for me," commented Norrie, who joins as the newest English competitor in history to overcome a global number one. "Bouncing back from a physical setback last year, I was defeated in the first round of qualifiers here. I just sought to embrace my tennis in the latter part of the year. To secure a victory like this, it's the biggest victory of my tennis journey, my first win over the world No 1 and probably the strongest competitor in the sport right now."

The British player, positioned 31st globally, also halted Alcaraz's impressive run of nine finals in a row and 17 consecutive premier event wins, which marked the best series of results in the Spanish star's developing career.

Contest Breakdown

The top seed looked to be moving confidently towards victory at the start as he sailed in the first set. Nevertheless, the British contender slowly battled back back into the game by executing with greater precision and engaging the Spaniard into extended, physical exchanges. His relentless shot tolerance and dependability gradually took its toll.

For much of the contest, Alcaraz served well but he had difficulty to get his timing right with his rally strokes. The 22-year-old appeared especially struggling striking his signature shot, which has been the most effective stroke in the game for a large part of this season, haemorrhaging 29 forehand miscues and a combined of 54 unforced errors. Across the net, the British player offered Alcaraz so few mistakes, keeping up his reliability, athleticism and power the entire contest while delivering effective serves and choosing his moments to advance forward and strike effectively.

After struggling for months due to a major arm issue and challenges with his game, Norrie fell as far down as 91st globally this year. Having reached the quarter-finals at the grass-court major and the Roland Garros round of 16 after that, this win reinforces the veteran's development as he aims to make his way to the top 20 and beyond. The Spanish sensation, notwithstanding his remarkable success, is yet to figure out how to produce his best tennis indoors.
