Prison Shock: The FormerPresident Bolsonaro Faces Time in Prison

He fought justice and the law won.

Sixty days subsequent to being handed a quarter-century plus sentence for seeking to “eradicate” the nation's political system, former president Jair Bolsonaro at last seems destined for incarceration.

Anticipated Imprisonment

The convicted coup-monger – who has been under home confinement in his estate while a series of judicial steps and challenges proceed – is broadly anticipated to be incarcerated in the coming days, amid increasing talk that he will be sent to a well-known maximum security prison.

Previous Remarks on Convicts

Throughout Bolsonaro’s long time in politics, the right-wing ex- soldier showed minimal compassion for Brazil’s jailed individuals.

“For what reason must we provide those lowlifes a easy time?” he once pondered. “They ought to simply be fucked, period. That's my view.”

In another instance, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Should you not wish to wind up in prison, the only thing required is to avoid sexual assault, abduction or theft.”

Jail Destination Discussion

Yet the idea of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda top-security prison in Brasília has horrified allies, a group of four this week visited the complex in an obvious bid to discourage the high court from sending him there.

Izalci Lucas, a senator from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was among that group, said he predicted the 70-year-old figure to be jailed in the coming fortnight and feared his location could be Papuda.

Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s acute digestive issues – the outcome of a near-fatal knife attack during the last political campaign – meant it would be hazardous to keep the one-time head of state there. “His health is highly critical. He won’t be able to cope if they move him to Papuda … It could be awful,” he added, who also expressed concern about cramped cells and the quality of jail cuisine.

When inspecting Papuda, Lucas recalled observing cells containing 40 detainees: “That’s practically one meter squared per detainee.

“We conversed to the inmates and they grumble, of course, of the awful meals,” added the senator.

Supporters Speak Out

Lucas is not the sole person speaking out ahead of the ex-leader's predicted imprisonment.

Authoring in a major daily, another ally, the ex- government official Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “brutal” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” time in office and alleged Brazil was about to see “the greatest political injustice in its history”.

“It is an wrong that gnaws the spirits of countless of Brazilians,” the former minister said.

Mixed Popular Opinion

That may be correct considering the considerable backing Bolsonaro retains on the conservative side. Yet his anticipated jailing has also gladdened the spirits of many individuals who think he deserves to be imprisoned for planning to stop his successor from taking power – and also plotting to have him killed.

Congressman Otoni, a representative for the sitting administration's allied group, stated: “Nobody desires Bolsonaro to be placed in a hole. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in isolation. Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We wish him to obtain proper treatment – but dignified care in prison. He cannot carry on being his personal jailer for his whole life.”

Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro allies, who have spent years praising the harsh conditions of convicts, had suddenly woken up to their privileges. “Only now has the conservative fringe – which has consistently asserted that basic rights were not for criminals – decided to visit a jail to discover what conditions are actually like,” he remarked.

“Bolsonaro is a criminal,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he merited “shameful, insulting treatment”.

Possible Incarceration Environment

Despite talk that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which currently holds about 14,000 inmates, his probable location looks to be a nearby jail for police officers and other “particular” detainees referred to as Papudinha (Little Papuda).

Its cells are far more comfortable than those in the main prison, although nevertheless a far cry from the opulence Bolsonaro enjoyed while occupying the stunning leader's home, about 20 kilometers away.

As per sources, the cell Bolsonaro could expect to reside in in Papudinha measures about 24 sq metres – roughly the area of a couple of car spots – and contains a 130 square foot restroom with a water facility and a 12 sq metre terrace. “He could be permitted to have a set and also a minibar in his room as long as they were donated by his loved ones,” the report stated.

Ideological Reactions

He condemned the rumoured idea to send the ex-president to Papuda as “a type of payback” on the part of the judicial authority who presided over Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will determine his fate in the {
