Slot Provides No Excuses and Vows to Plot Route Out of Slump
Arne Slot stated he needed to “look at myself” following the Reds endured a 6th loss in seven English top-flight matches on their own turf to Forest and insisted he would discover a way from the champions’ slump.
Nottingham Forest, in the relegation zone before kick off, delivered the largest win at Liverpool's stadium in their history as the Merseyside club fell to an eighth loss in 11 fixtures in all competitions. The British record signing, Alexander Isak, was once more anonymous and the home side contended the defender's opener should have been disallowed for similar reasons to the captain's disallowed effort against Manchester City before the international break. But Slot conceded the buck rested with him and made no excuses.
“Nobody wants to hear me now speaking about refereeing decisions if you are defeated 3-0 in your own stadium to Nottingham Forest,” stated the Reds' boss. “I ought to examine myself first and my squad, but it does show you how a score can change the flow of a match. Before I was just hoping for us to score a strike. Later we hardly created anything.
“Naturally there is a way out, particularly with the quality players we have. No matter if you triumph or are beaten when you reflect you are always considering: ‘In which areas can we do better, where can we adjust?’ but that is something else from questioning yourself.
“I wish to emphasise I am accountable for the current losses. You are responsible when you are victorious but also responsible when you are defeated. I can never come up with sufficient excuses for us to have the results we have. That is not acceptable and I am to blame for that.”
The team's performance fell apart as Slot introduced several attacking substitutions when chasing the match. “It was the identical away at Nottingham Forest last season,” he said. “I took Ibou [Ibrahima Konaté] out and put on [Diogo] Jota and he found the net straight away to make it 1-1. Then it was courageous, currently it’s probably stupid.”
The Anfield side last lost back-to-back home Premier League games against Nottingham Forest in the sixties. The last time they lost consecutive league matches by a 3-0 scoreline was in the mid-60s.
Slot said: “It was very bad. Playing at home, losing 3-0 no matter which team you encounter is a terrible outcome. Unexpected if you look at the opening 30 minutes of the game. I haven’t seen us creating so many chances in the initial half-hour maybe the entire campaign, and the initial occasion they arrived in our penalty area they scored.
“It wasn’t against Manchester City, but in all other fixture we have been the controlling team and were capable to create opportunities. Recently it is almost consistently that we fail to convert our opportunities and the attempts we concede go in.”
