The Mayor-Elect states his intention to make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
NYC's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that was a central issue in his campaign.
A Traditional Abode
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for the majority of New York City mayors after the mid-20th century.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core issue, did not confirm this decision immediately after his electoral win in November.
"This decision rested on the security of my family and the imperative to directing my full attention on carrying out the agenda for affordability the city's residents supported," stated Mamdani in his announcement.
Leaving Astoria
Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, a community famous for its diverse cultural enclaves and culinary diversity.
"To the people of Astoria: thank you for exemplifying what is great about New York City," he noted.
"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, it will always live inside me and my efforts as mayor," he affirmed.
Political Debate
In his election campaign, Mamdani connected his central policy – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.
But his opponents, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing despite the fact that he is from a famous family.
Previous Exceptions
Not every mayor have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, chose to live in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which concluded in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a venue for official events, and championed a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.
A Stately Residence
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion for his swearing-in on 1 January, he will be surrounded by a setting far removed from his humble Astoria apartment.
Featuring pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house overlooking the East River.
Within, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's historical period.
The compound, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
Some residents have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
His former home is rent-stabilized, meaning the city regulates on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.
Tenants view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the cost of housing rises faster than the means of many residents.
Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from the property website Zillow, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
