The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Chose the Incorrect Critical Role Song
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure from Critical Role, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It features the beloved cast of misfits, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple agonizing backstories for key figures such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.
Overall, the intro looks amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the music selection.
The intro uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional song composed by artist the talented musician. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second release put out by the production company's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic option, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will love its inclusion.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that was part of the second campaign's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", written by singer-songwriter the artist, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when cast member the performer wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you start an episode of adventurous fun.
The show's intro with "the new song" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, the creators has stated that the animated show will have some surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening appears as one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be released on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of the second series, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and YouTube.
