"When are you interviewing the Haim sisters?" a text reads. "I wanted to ask if I can become their extra sister."

There is only a key snag: I also desires to be the Haims' newest recruit. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Multiple high-profile admirers have openly petitioned for the position.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career doing sets at local delicatessens with their parents. Now they're repeated Grammy hopefuls.

Similar to the greatest groups, they're a inseparable gang. Their videos frequently feature them striding in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such pure happiness you inevitably think, "I want to be part of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that audience members told us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a drum kit'," says Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That is the biggest honor. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire young girls to start a band."

"And thus anyone is invited to be the next part of the family."

Award Nod

The trio have called into a break, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been shortlisted for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in contention for the award.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the honor isn't lost on the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a huge milestone," says Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the women that inspired us."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The record came out of a phase of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music inhabits that unique in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The words follow departures and goodbyes. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them determining in the moment who they want to be.

"I love way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to actively work on shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Style

That newfound confidence called for a fresh approach – more raw and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Humor

The band's openness inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic misadventures.

Someone left Este over a health concern. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Future

You can clearly sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an worldwide fan base.

Yet the sister act will consistently be their number one priority.

"We have been playing music since I was a young child," says Alana. "It's like no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
