They're Doing to America What They Executed with Christianity

The Trump movement's most telling and distinctive occasions – not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most dangerous, nor most senseless, but potentially its most enlightening – occurred earlier this fall. In the course of multiple weeks, the US president started showing the public his intentions for an ornate dance hall two times larger of the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the East Wing portion to erect it.

He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad – the existing assessment of fatalities resulting from his reductions to foreign assistance is 600,000 and increasing, and presently research predicted his fossil fuel policies would kill another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No other president would have dared – really, no previous leader would have contemplated – solo demolishing large sections of the executive mansion to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of multiple America's wealthiest, almost all of whom have business with the government.

We moved from 'the gentle will obtain the Earth' to 'the humble will perish of cholera'

As disorienting as it is to watch the leader attempt to overturn the traditional concept of democracy and substitute it with its direct contrary, there is one large group of Americans who might not perceive it totally unfamiliar. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations a near majority – who were educated as conventional Protestant believers.

We have watched throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we learned about into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. Essentially, they transformed an image of compassion into a figure of animosity who approves precisely the cruelties that he criticized in the Gospel; this change developed more slowly, through multiple decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disturbing through similar means, a confusing personal impact for many of us.

A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself

Therefore allow me to outline the Christ from my childhood, because theoretically the Savior is the core of any Christian faith, and because the rapidly expanding group within America could have minimal awareness regarding him because they identify as atheists or agnostics or spiritual independents. I take no issue with any of these traditions, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that exist valuable insights of great price in biblical accounts.

It is emphatically absolutely not the narrative of an authoritative monarch emerging; conversely, an infant arrives to homeless parents in an automotive shelter, who need to rapidly escape to a foreign land to evade covert authorities. The baby grows up in modest conditions, a laboring woodworker; his teaching concerns compassion for other people, particularly for the poor – not simply tender feelings, but a concrete one, expressed by feeding and sheltering. Christ's response to hostility is to offer the other cheek – not as an act of compliant endurance, but as a means to teach the attacker; his crime policy states that when an individual takes your coat you must offer the person your additional clothing too.

The obvious and straightforward fact that the Savior of the gospels advocates for a kind of profound affection concentrated on the poor is what has always made Christian religion somewhat of a scandalous religion: attractive to the general public, but because of its natural unconventionality demanding to be restrained. In the fifties it was restrained by dilution – Protestantism was so widespread that it practically sanctified existing conditions.

A Conflict for the Best of Us

So I have been heartened to see the steadfast resistance to Trump develop in this past year. It has been substantial consolation to help build the campaign that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated electorate to participate in numbers during minor elections. We must have to continue it, and with identical determination, displaying national flags throughout each rally and calls to the best parts of American history.

We shall be interrogated ... about how you treated the foreigner? Did you accept these individuals and receive them or refuse?

The country is optimally secured, essentially, through connection to the best about American history, similar to Christianity is best defended by relationship to elements that cause it to be unique and magnificent, specifically the model of Jesus. In neither case does it mean feigning the worst regarding America and religious tradition did not happen; it signifies both meekness and faith, a mixture that committed US believers should embrace.
