Trump's Woke Alarm Overlooks Europe's Real Danger: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" policies represent an existential threat to the continent's identity. However, this perspective rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The true challenge facing Europe is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Divide Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. Over this period, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Today, roughly 50% of the world’s top fifty technology firms are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Problem

The growing disparity stems from superior productivity growth in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly American. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at over $10bn, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity raises a vital question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is Europe stand? Most analysts agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the United States and China, with European nations entering at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a true capital markets union, which caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under a single regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is split among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these challenges, one can find causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to propose serious reform. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for sweeping reforms.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses considerable strengths: skilled human capital, top-tier education systems, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating next-generation tech, it can still dramatically increase economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a decisive moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's technological decline has been steady. However, without decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
