A large-scale search and recovery mission is currently in progress in the Caribbean Sea for a pair of unlocated boats loaded with humanitarian supplies traveling from the Mexican coast to the island of Cuba.

Military Rescue Operations Initiated

The Mexican government has sent navy personnel and reconnaissance aircraft to locate the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting at least nine crew members, according to a official statement.

The boats had been expected to reach Cuba's capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and zero verification of their safe arrival, the navy said.

Context of Humanitarian Support to Cuba

Cuba has depended significantly on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the country grapples with multiple nationwide blackouts.

"The skippers and their teams are veteran seafarers, and both vessels are outfitted with proper navigational gear and communication devices," a representative for the convoy stated.

The nine crew members are citizens of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Officials said it has opened communications with coast guard agencies from each country along with their consular staff.

"We are collaborating completely with the authorities and remain confident in the ability of the crews to reach Havana safely," the statement continued.

Recent Relief Shipment

Previously that week, the government in Havana widely celebrated and warmly received a separate vessel that had transported a significant amount of relief supplies to the country.

That boat, nicknamed "a new Granma" after the yacht in which Castro came back to Cuba to launch the armed struggle in the mid-20th century, brought solar equipment, medicines, formula milk, cycles and foodstuffs.

Broader Geopolitical Backdrop

Charity groups and individuals have primarily led attempts to bring humanitarian aid to Cuba beginning in January, coinciding with the time a oil sanctions on the island nation was initiated.

International organizations have since raised alarms about "dire" lack of essential goods, with over 50,000 surgical procedures called off in Cuba amid electricity supply constraints.

Political measures have been ramped up lately, with remarks from different representatives underscoring the complex state of diplomatic ties.

Reacting to previous statements, a high-ranking Cuban official stated firmly that "the political system of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Accounts suggest that initial phases of talks had begun, although their present status remains unclear.

The maritime authorities affirmed it was dedicated to using every available asset at its command to discover the vessels and guarantee the well-being of the sailors.
